Ever wanted to own a recording studio? AIR Studios, the famous recording studio, is for sale.
AIR Studios was set up by ‘the fifth Beatle’ Sir George Martin, in 1969 in Hampstead (very near Belsize Park station). Many of the world’s most famous bands and musicians have recorded there. These include: George Michael, U2, Robbie Williams, Paul Weller, Placebo, Skunk Anansie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mark Ronson, Adele, Coldplay, Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, to name but a few.
For those of us lucky enough to have been there (we have!) it’s one of the world’s most impressive recording studios. The building is a Grade II-listed converted church and missionary school. The live room is big enough for a full symphony orchestra and choir simultaneously. For this reason, many film composers use AIR. Wonder Woman, Interstellar, The Grand Budapest Hotel were all recorded in the north London studio.
Co-owners Richard Boote and Paul Woolf have shared their reasons for selling due to it being time for a younger generation to take over.
“We’re a pair of old farts, basically,” Woolf told Billboard, adding, “We’ve worked very hard over a number of years to get the business in really solid shape, but there’s always a future path and it’s time to go. There’s someone out there who’s younger and who has got the tenacity that we had when we were 40. There comes a point in time when you need to hand it over to someone else whilst it’s in the Premiership.”
Want to buy the studio? You get the whole building and all the equipment. How much? The equipment alone is worth £4 million, add the listed building to that and it’ll cost a pretty penny.
Worth every penny, if you ask us.
